Here's my view from the Kiosk for Saturday the 24th
Cold, wet, rainy and just not a nice day to be in the park. So, not many visitors for my return engagement. Only helped about 50 people and gave out 35 maps
#1 best question: “Where are we?” Young lady on a phone
“At the base of Strawberry Fields, where is your friend”
“It’s not my friend, it is Lyft, he can’t find us”
I then had to explain to her that there were no cars allowed on the road, which is why she only could see horse and carriages and pedi cabs. Sometimes, I just wonder where people were educated.
#2 best question: “Can you show us where the fountain they filmed Friends is?” Very British woman asking. I didn’t flinch and gave her directions directly to Cherry Hill. Hope I made her day.
weird interaction: An older and kind of eccentric looking couple were walking this slightly disheveled Border Collie with a nice pink hair bow. They walked by the kiosk going East to West right after my shift began. I noticed them because I remarked, “What a hairy and pretty girl!” To the dog, that was. They headed up to Strawberry Fields and I forgot about them. About 90 minutes into my shift, they appeared at my kiosk again. The woman asked for directions to 5th Avenue. I told her and then she very loudly said, “No, you need to show me, I don’t understand what you are saying” Let me be clear, there was no language issue here. So, I leaned out of the kiosk and with very dramatic arm gestures, as if I were working at an airport, I showed her the direction to walk. She thanked me, and then came even closer, “What does this mean?” pointing to the map,”Conservancy? I see that word all over the place” I told her that the Conservancy is a public-private partnership to manage the park. To this, she said, “I know that!” “But this word, ‘Conservancy’, what does that word mean?” This didn’t really phase me, I am so used to crazy people on the subway. So, I said, “It means To Protect” She said, “Oh, good to know, thank you” and walked off with her friend and her dog. I’ve been pondering this interaction and I can only conclude that she was tripping.
