A View from the Kiosk ( Friday Edition)

Here’s my View from the Kiosk for Friday the 31st of May

I had a busy day planned for Saturday, and I was able to grab a shift in the kiosk on Friday afternoon. I was looking forward to a quiet time in the kiosk, but the park was so busy. In my three hour shift, I gave out 150 maps and helped no fewer than 350 people.

#1 Best Question? “How come there are not a lot of squirrels in the park today?”

-okay, I really wanted to answer, “How the F should I know……..” But I just said, “I am not a great volunteer because I don’t know a lot about the squirrel population in the park…….. “

#2 Best Question? “If we take a horse and carriage ride, where can we store our (double wide, hight tech) baby stroller?”

--okay, I really wanted to answer, “How the F should I know……..But I just said, “You should probably ask the driver….”

#1 Funny Interaction? This happens a lot during the summer. This group of three approached me all holding white papers. They were from the Riverkeepers ( an organization I support) and they were in the park on a scavenger hunt after their conference. They asked me to help them and then swore me to secrecy just in case anyone else from the group came up to ask for help.

#1 Funny Question “How do we get out?” Poor couple, they had no idea where they came in and nothing I could say jogged their memory. They probably spent the night in the park………

#2 Funny Interaction? This couple stood right in front of me, intently staring at the map. They were looking for Strawberry Fields. I like to let people ask me for help rather than throw myself on visitors. I feel that some of the other volunteers don’t let people navigate on their own, and I know that a lot of people do like to do it without help. So, they are looking at the map, discussing and then say to each other, “We are lost!” Then, they look at me, smile and walk away…..

Visitors? No visitors……….

#1 most asked question other than “where is Strawberry Fields?’

“How do we get to the Zoo?”

Most Popular Language? Spanish. In fact, I had the most interesting interaction with these three girls from Spain. They came up to the kiosk and just started to ask me questions in Spanish. I don’t know how they knew I would be able to answer them, but it was almost the same way that people from the US think everyone in the world can answer them in English. I wasn’t insulted, I was flattered, and they were so grateful to learn about the one minute walk to Strawberry Fields all in Spanish!
