A View from the Kiosk

Here's my view from the Kiosk for Saturday the 3rd, 2018.

Welcome to March! Unfortunately, it was the day after the weird storm and it was still pretty windy and not so warm. Very quiet and somewhat boring shift, but let me give the highlights........

best question? “How do I get to Hunter College?”

this was the best only because it was a first. Nobody ever asked this before.

best interaction? two men came up to the map and one of them was explaining to his friend where they had been and where they were going. His friend looked like he would rather be in a bar drinking a beer, shooting pool and looking at women’s behinds. I leaned out of my kiosk and told the first man that he gave a great explanation and maybe his friend would like a free map of the park. His response? “Nah, he’s a reluctant tourist.....he’s from Idaho.

weirdest question? An older man walking a little dog comes up and asks, “Can you point out the two plainclothes policemen to me?” I told him certainly not. He then said. “Okay, that’s too bad. I really need them to testify at the trial” It was clear he wanted to engage me in conversation and wanted me to ask about this trial. I didn’t take the bait and was saved by a group of lost tourists who couldn’t find Strawberry Fields. I thought I was safe and then he came back again. “Is there still a police substation next to the transverse road?”

I pointed to the map, it is clearly marked there that it is there. He left. Phew.........

most straight? A man with wife and two kids in tow stand directly in front of my kiosk. I stand there and smile. He has his phone up and is moving his arms around clearly trying to orient himself with the map on his app. His wife says, “just ask the man” He continues to fumble with the phone, says he knows where they are going and off they walk in the wrong direction! She gave me a “Save US” look but I said nothing. I am not going to interject myself when a man is hunting and gathering for his tribe.

best visit? Jackie from Munich came by for her SECOND visit. This time, she brought her lovely sister, Juliana. Come on NYC friends, if someone from Germany can visit me twice, where are you all??
