Here’s my View from the Kiosk for Saturday the 25th of May.

It’s been a busy Memorial Day weekend, so I’m a little late with this edition of A View. The weather was gorgeous in the kiosk and it was a very busy shift. It was also a day of interesting questions. Handed out about 200 maps and helped one 400 people.
#1 Best Question? “Where can we find the Dosa cart?” This was asked by a nice family of south Indians. Made me laugh and think about Americans going overseas and looking for the McDonald’s. Anyway, I had to let them down with my answer as the famous dosa cart is in Washington Square Park and not Central Park. They were a bit disappointed, but were just so lovely to talk to.
#1 Funny Interaction? This Rasta guy came up to the kiosk with a lit joint in his mouth. His question? “Hey, how do I get up?” I explained to him that there is no smoking in the park and then verified with him, that he really was trying to go uptown, not up.
#2 Funny Interaction? “Can I have a free map?”
- “Here you go!”
“Can I have a second one?”
-“We ask you to use one per group”
-“Buddy, I have a wife, I need two!!!”
#1 Most Difficult questions (ever)? Two young woman approached the kiosk and asked me something in Spanish that I didn’t understand. After a bit of Google translate I was able to understand that they were from Rosario, Argentina and wanted to place flowers at the site of the terrorist attack that killed 8 people, including 5 from their town. They thought the attack had taken place in Central Park, but I showed them the city map and directed them to the Hudson Greenway in Tribeca. It was really a sad moment in the kiosk.
Most British? Once again, I received many “lovelies” and “brilliants”
Visitors? I had a visit from the lovely Kate Garretson who was rightfully impressed by my knowledge of the park!

#1 most asked question other than “where is Strawberry Fields?’
“How do we get to the Met?” Kind of shocking that so many people wanted to go to the Met when it was such a pretty day out.
Most Popular Language? British English
