Here’s my View from the Kiosk for Saturday the 30th of March
What a beautiful day. First shift of the year that was warm enough to not have to wear a jacket. Surprisingly enough, the nice weather didn’t bring out the crowds that I had expected. I handed out 125 maps and helped about 500 people in my two-hour shift. The row boats were back on the lake and the seasonal bathrooms reopened, so all is good in the park!
#1 Best Question? “How do we get to our car? We parked on 5thAvenue?” This was as funny as when they ask me how to get back to the main entrance, or how to get back to where we rented the bikes.
#1 Funny Interaction? “Where is the closest bathroom?”
- “Well, that depends on what direction you are headed in the park”
“Strawberry Fields”
- “Ok, the nearest is on the other side of that hill, just walk up the path where those two people are pushing the stroller”
At this moment, a woman who was walking past stopped and blurted out that the woman who was chatting with should go to the bathroom at Bethesda Terrace instead because they just mopped the floors.
Everyone in New York has an opinion.
#1 Timely Interaction? In the distance I could see a large group of high school kids approaching. As they got closer, I could make out MSU logo wear and I am thinking they are a group of incoming freshmen to MSU. As they approach, one of them shouts out, “OH MY GOD!!! HE IS PROPOSING!!” and sure enough, a guy was on his knee in the gazebo at Wagner Cove proposing to his fiancée. All the kids stopped to watch and then broke out into unrestrained applause and shouting of congratulations. It was a nice moment.
#2 Weirdest Interaction? - “Can I have a map?”
- “Of course.”
- “I need two, I am a school teacher, after all!”
Visitors? Nobody.
#1 most asked question other than “where is Strawberry Fields?’ “Where is Balto”
Most Popular Language? Today was a day of Spanish. I gave directions in Spanish several times and it was fantastic! Other than the couple from Spain who I couldn’t understand at all.
