A View from the Kiosk

Here’s my View from the Kiosk for Saturday the 16th of February

What a gorgeous day in the kiosk. It was a little chilly, but the sun was so strong that half way through the shift, I took off my winter coat and worked in my ugly green sweatshirt only. I sighted several robins intermixed with the huddled masses from Europe visiting Strawberry Fields, and the birds were singing a springtime melody. Not a ton of visitors. Only handed out about 35 maps today.

#1 Best Question? Okay, you might think this was a goof, but this woman was 100% believable, so either she is a good actress and I was spoofed, or she was sincere. She was British.

“How do they preserve the strawberries in Strawberry Field? It is awfully cold in the winter and I don’t see how they can live.”

#2nd Best Question? “How do we get to the Statue of Liberty?”

Best Overheard? Horse carriage driver telling passengers that “Wagner Cove is ahead. It is a place to get married, and then 6 months later, come back and push your wife into the lake”

#1 Best Interaction? This older couple walked up to the kiosk rolling suitcases. This is pretty common on the weekend because people need to check out of their hotels and want to tour the park prior to their flights. Of course, as they approached, I was the smart ass and asked if they needed directions to JFK. Turns out they were from Oregon and just completed a cruise from the West coast to the East coast via the Panama canal. The woman was very concerned because they had visited Fulton Street mall on Friday and she saw no older people, and she wanted to know where the old people live. I told them to take a stroll around the Upper West before they catch their Uber. There is no shortage. She then told me it was her first trip to NYC and how scared she had been prior to the trip. She was afraid of the big city and all that comes with it. She told me how refreshing it was that everyone in NYC was so friendly and what a great city this is. We had a nice chat.

Visitors? Nobody was brave enough to come out in the cold

Most Popular Language? Mainly people speaking French in the park today - again
