A View from the Kiosk

Here’s my View from the Kiosk for Saturday the 9th of February

View of Wagner's Cove from the kiosk

Cold, cold and cold. But at least very sunny. Not too many visitors. I helped out 65 people in my two hour shift and handed out 32 maps.

#1 Best Question? “How do we get to the Brooklyn Bridge?” This was not the first time that someone has asked me this question, but it is always funny that they are asking this while in the park. I told them how to get downtown, and then they asked how to get to Wall Street and to Times Square. They certainly will have a busy afternoon.

#1 Worst Interaction? A man let his dog pee on my kiosk. The man just smiled at me. What an ass.

#1 Funniest It isn’t nice to make fun of people for poor language skills. I am sure when I was abroad, I also sounded like an idiot, but today, the nicest Japanese lady visited the kiosk and asked me all about the two “Foundationals” in the park. The Bethesda Foundational and the Friend’s Foundational. I didn’t correct, I just let her know directions.

#1 Best Interaction? Not really the best, but a very common one. During my shift, numerous pedi cab drivers pass the kiosk. As they pass the kiosk, they begin to educate their passengers on the next statue which is Daniel Webster. So, several times a day, I hear various explanations and quizzes on who Danial Webster was. Today, I head this about 20 times, but one interaction I found interesting. As the pedi cab was passing, the passenger asked the driver about Yoko Ono. The driver told the passenger that he sees her all the time and that for a woman in her 80’s she is in amazing shape and looks so much younger. I was shocked because the last time I saw her, she could hardly walk and looked terrible. Anyway, I guess sometimes it is better to embellish. After all, now when anyone asks me where the Friend’s Fountain is, I always smile and say, “right ahead, on your left”

Visitors? Nobody was brave enough to come out in the cold

#1 most asked question other than “where is Strawberry Fields?’

“Where is the museum?” - makes sense on a cold day.

Most Popular Language?

Many people speaking French in the park today
